AHS101 Integumentary System

Unit Description

AHS101 Integumentary System, introduces students to the complexity of the ‘integumentary system’, the skin and related appendages. Various barriers that the skin provides will be discussed as will various lesions. Homeostasis, hormones and epidermopoiesis will be explored. This is a fundamental unit that so many others will refer to and reflect on.

Learning Outcomes

1. Describe the functions and major anatomical components of the integumentary system
2. Define the histology and anatomy of hair, skin and nails
3. Express the physiology of the skin, hair and nails, including function of the associated glands and proteins
4. Describe the role of the somatosensory system
5. Communicate the process of cellular turnover of the skin
6. Articulate the ageing process of the skin and associated measures to limit or reduce the signs
7. Discuss the effects of hormones on the skin
